Max Planck, caricature

Max Planck (1858-1947). Caricature of the German theoretical physicist Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck. Planck pioneered quantum mechanics, revolutionizing classical physics. His 1900 paper describing black body radiation proposed that radiation must be emitted or received in energy packets (quanta), rather than continuously. Quantum theory was fully accepted after its successful prediction of the photoelectric effect (Einstein, 1905) and of the electronic structure of atoms (Bohr, 1913). Planck received the 1918 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work

EDITORS COMMENTS
This comical black and white sketch captures the essence of Max Planck, a renowned German theoretical physicist who revolutionized classical physics with his pioneering work in quantum mechanics. The caricature portrays Planck with a mischievous grin on his face, adding a touch of humor to this historic illustration. In 1900, Planck published a groundbreaking paper on black body radiation that proposed the existence of energy packets called quanta. This revolutionary idea challenged the prevailing notion that radiation was continuous and paved the way for the development of quantum theory. Quantum mechanics gained widespread acceptance after successfully predicting phenomena such as the photoelectric effect (as demonstrated by Einstein in 1905) and explaining the electronic structure of atoms (as elucidated by Bohr in 1913). For his remarkable contributions to science, Planck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1918. This portrait captures him during an era when scientific discoveries were transforming our understanding of nature's fundamental laws. The monochrome artwork against a white background adds an air of nostalgia to this cutout image from Science Photo Library. It serves as a visual reminder not only of Max Planck's significant impact on physics but also highlights his status as one of history's most influential scientists.
