Laser bulb research
Bulb research. Laser being used to study a high- powered HBI lamp (centre left), a type of tungsten halogen light bulb. The bulb contains bromine and iodine gas. These gases bind to any of the light- generating tungsten filament that evaporates, eventually diffusing back to the filament where the tungsten is deposited. This extends the bulbs life and maintains its clarity by preventing the deposition of tungsten on its inner surface. The laser beam allows the chemical reactions occurring in the bulb to be studied by spectroscopy. Photographed at Siemens Osram Sylvania Laboratory in Beverly, Massachusetts, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the fascinating world of laser bulb research. At the heart of this image is a high-powered HBI lamp, a remarkable tungsten halogen light bulb containing bromine and iodine gas. These gases play a crucial role in prolonging the lifespan and maintaining the clarity of the bulb by binding to any evaporated tungsten filament and diffusing it back to where it originated. Located at Siemens Osram Sylvania Laboratory in Beverly, Massachusetts, USA, this cutting-edge facility allows scientists to delve into the chemical reactions occurring within these bulbs using spectroscopy techniques. And that's where the laser beam comes into play - it serves as an invaluable tool for studying these reactions in detail. The photograph captures a moment frozen in time during one such analysis session. It symbolizes innovation and progress within both electrical engineering and physics realms. This mesmerizing blend of technology, research, and industry exemplifies American ingenuity at its finest. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an extraordinary glimpse into scientific exploration through their lens. While we admire this incredible display of expertise and dedication, let us not forget that behind every breakthrough lies countless hours of meticulous study conducted by brilliant minds striving to illuminate our world with knowledge.
