Gold hallmarks, 1986

Gold hallmarks from 1986 on a gold object. A hallmark is an official mark made on an item of precious metal to guarantee the quality of the metal. In the past this was done by guilds, and later by assay offices. Hallmarks usually indicate the quality, who made the item, and the year of marking. The mark at left is that of the maker (MSC), Mark Coleman. The four marks at right are (from left): the quality mark (crown and 750 gold quality, ie. 18-carat gold); the assay office mark (here an anchor mark for the UK city of Birmingham); and the year mark (M) for the year 1986

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of gold hallmarks from the year 1986, meticulously imprinted on a golden object. Hallmarks hold great significance as they serve as official marks that guarantee the quality of precious metals. In ancient times, guilds were responsible for marking these symbols, later taken over by assay offices. Each hallmark in this image conveys vital information about the gold item: starting from left to right, we have the mark of its maker - MSC or Mark Coleman. On the right side are four distinct marks: firstly, the quality mark represented by a crown and "750" indicating it is made of 18-carat gold; secondly, an anchor symbolizing Birmingham - one of UK's renowned cities with a rich history in metalworking; finally, we find the year mark denoted by an elegant letter 'M', signifying that this piece was marked in 1986. This photograph not only captures historical elements but also represents industrial craftsmanship at its finest. It serves as a reminder of how these familiar objects carry stories within them and act as common items connecting us to our past. The intricate hallmarks engraved on this golden artifact tell tales of English heritage and British excellence in metalwork during the late 20th century.
