E. Rutherford together with Niels Bohr
The New Zealand born physicist Sir Ernest Rutherford (left) with the Danish physicist Niels Bohr. Their work greatly contributed to improve the understanding of the atomic structure. Rutherford (1871-1937) may be considered the father of nuclear physics for his studies on radioactive decay. In 1908 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry. Bohr (1885-1962) used and developed the new concepts of the quantum theory to elaborate a new atomic model in which electrons are found at discrete levels of energies and angular momentums. He received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1922

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic moment when two brilliant minds, E. Rutherford and Niels Bohr, came together to revolutionize our understanding of atomic structure. On the left stands Sir Ernest Rutherford, a distinguished physicist born in New Zealand (1871-1937), who is widely regarded as the father of nuclear physics due to his groundbreaking research on radioactive decay. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, he was honored with the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1908. Beside him stands Danish physicist Niels Bohr (1885-1962), a recipient of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1922. Bohr utilized and expanded upon quantum theory concepts to develop an entirely new atomic model that proposed electrons exist at discrete energy levels and angular momentums. This revolutionary idea laid the foundation for modern atomic theory. The meeting between these two intellectual powerhouses marked a turning point in scientific history, propelling humanity's comprehension of fundamental particles forward by leaps and bounds. Their collaboration not only deepened our knowledge but also paved the way for countless advancements in various fields. This remarkable group portrait immortalizes their significant achievements and serves as a reminder of their enduring legacy within the scientific community. As we gaze upon this image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how these noble laureates forever changed our perception of matter and continue to inspire generations to push boundaries and unravel nature's mysteries through relentless curiosity and dedication to discovery.
