Daisy fleabane flower, SEM
Daisy fleabane flower. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the flower head of daisy fleabane (Erigeron sp.). This " flower" is actually a compound inflorescence composed of many small tubular flowers. This is similar to the arrangement in the sunflower, to which daisy fleabane is related (they are both members of the Asteraceae). The name " fleabane" comes from the mistaken belief that the flower repels fleas or other insects. Daisy fleabanes are native to North America and are found in most of the USA and southern Canada; they have been introduced to Europe. Magnification: x8 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Daisy fleabane flower. Captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), the image reveals the stunning details of this compound inflorescence composed of numerous small tubular flowers. Reminiscent of a sunflower's arrangement, this daisy fleabane is part of the Asteraceae family, just like its larger relative. Contrary to popular belief, the name "fleabane" does not imply that it repels fleas or insects. Rather, it stems from an erroneous assumption about its properties. Native to North America and widely distributed across most of the USA and southern Canada, these charming flowers have also found their way to European shores through introduction. The magnified view at 6x7cm size allows us to appreciate every delicate detail in vibrant color. From its bracts and flowering parts to its overall structure, this SEM image offers a unique perspective on nature's wonders. It serves as a reminder that even within seemingly ordinary plants like daisy fleabanes lie extraordinary complexities waiting to be explored. This remarkable photograph is brought to you by Science Photo Library – an invaluable resource for those fascinated by botany, plant life, and all things scientific.
