Medical purging, satirical artwork

Medical purging. Satirical artwork showing a physician (in robes) and his assistant purging patients. Follies and fantasies are purged in a cloud (upper right) using an oven to bake the head. Fools are purged using a drug to force excretion (left). Originally French, this later German artwork was drawn in Strasbourg circa 1600 by German artist Matthias Greuter (1564-1638). This version names the doctor Wurmbrandt (worm burner), and is part of a collection held in Frankfurt. This copy was reproduced in Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Medical Purging" is a satirical artwork that takes us back to the 17th century. Created by German artist Matthias Greuter in Strasbourg around 1600, this piece showcases a physician and his assistant engaging in the unconventional practice of purging patients. The doctor, named Wurmbrandt (meaning worm burner), can be seen wearing robes while his assistant assists him in purging patients. The artwork depicts two methods of purging: one involves baking heads in an oven to rid individuals of their follies and fantasies, symbolized by a cloud on the upper right; the other method employs drugs to force excretion for fools on the left side. This thought-provoking image sheds light on historical medical practices during medieval times. Reproduced in Eugen Hollander's book "Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin" (Caricature and Satire in Medicine) published in 1921, this particular copy is part of a collection held in Frankfurt. It offers insight into how mental illnesses were treated centuries ago, highlighting both psychological and physical aspects. With its intricate details and monochrome aesthetic, this artwork serves as a reminder of our ever-evolving understanding of medicine throughout history. It invites viewers to reflect upon past beliefs surrounding healthcare while appreciating the artistic expression embedded within it.
