1863 Kingsley Water Babies gorilla
In 1863 churchman Charles Kingsley wrote " The Waterbabies" a moralising tale that included human do-as-you-likes de-evolving back to apes (and further) because of their careless ways. Here a composite includes Kingsleys text from the first edition together with Linley Sambournes later illustration. In it of one of the ape like degenerates is trying to stop a (Du Chaillu like) hunter from shooting him - but is unable to speak. Kingsley found no problem believing Darwins thesis of natural selection. Many religious men of the time took special creation as allegorical, and thought God worked by natural laws which He had set in place
