EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of early 20th-century construction in Truro, Cornwall. The image showcases an unidentified building under construction, believed to be the HTP warehouse on Malpas Road. In the foreground, three men confidently stand on the scaffolding, overseeing the progress with a sense of purpose. Two more figures can be seen in the distance, further emphasizing the scale of this ambitious project. The same trio of men also appear in another photograph depicting the completed Malpas Road warehouse for HTP - Hosken, Trevithick and Polkinhorn - esteemed agricultural and grain merchants at that time. This intriguing connection suggests their significant involvement throughout its development. Designed by architect Alfred J. Cornelius, this remarkable structure was finally completed in 1911. Little did they know then that it would later undergo a transformation into nine modern apartments as part of Poltisco Wharf's redevelopment. Photographer Arthur William Jordan skillfully captured this momentous occasion with his lens, immortalizing these hardworking laborers amidst towering girders and bustling activity. Their dedication symbolizes not only growth but also reflects Truro's spirit of regeneration and industrial prowess during this era. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot today, we are reminded of how far our cities have come through countless transformations like these – where once stood unfinished buildings now thrive vibrant communities shaped by progress and innovation.
