EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the early 1920s, capturing a significant landmark in Truro's history - St Johns Sunday School. Perched proudly atop Infirmary Hill and Lemon Street junction, this building holds many stories within its walls. Originally built as a Grammar School between 1877-1880, it served as an educational institution before being repurposed into the beloved St Johns Sunday School. Sadly, this iconic structure met its demise in August 1962 when it was demolished, leaving behind only memories and photographs like this one. As we gaze at the image, our eyes are drawn to the left-hand side where another notable establishment comes into view - The Thomas Daniell restaurant. This building would later become known for its delectable cuisine and warm hospitality. The photographer of this remarkable snapshot remains unknown but has gifted us with a glimpse into Truro's past that is both nostalgic and intriguing. It serves as a reminder of how cities evolve over time while still retaining fragments of their heritage. This print from Royal Cornwall Museum transports us back to an era long gone but not forgotten. It invites us to imagine bustling streets filled with locals going about their daily lives against the backdrop of these historic landmarks – St Johns Sunday School and The Thomas Daniell restaurant – forever etched in Truro's collective memory.
