EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in the history of Cornwall - the opening ceremony of the Royal Cornwall Museum on 11th June 1919. The grand event took place at River Street, Truro, where esteemed guests gathered to celebrate this significant milestone. In the center of attention sits John Charles Williams, President of the Royal Institution of Cornwall and Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, occupying the prestigious presidential chair. To his left is none other than the Prince of Wales himself, who would later ascend to become King Edward VIII. The young prince dons the uniform of Commander in Chief, proudly representing The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. To complete this distinguished gathering, we see what is believed to be W. A. Phillips, Mayor of Truro at that time seated to the right. Their presence adds an air of regality and importance to this historic photograph. Prior to this auspicious day, the collections belonging to the Royal Institution had been housed in a section within Union Place - once home to Truro's Vivian family. However, with great pride and anticipation for its future endeavors as a museum dedicated to preserving Cornish heritage and culture; it was decided that a new location was necessary. Preserved by Opie Ltd. , this remarkable image not only immortalizes these notable figures but also serves as a testament to their commitment towards fostering knowledge and appreciation for Cornwall's rich history.
