EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the enchanting Morrab Gardens in Penzance, Cornwall on a sunny day of June 1904. The view from this vantage point showcases the picturesque fountain lawn, with its lush greenery stretching towards St Marys Place and St Marys Terrace. In this snapshot frozen in time, we see two elegantly dressed ladies and a gentleman standing to the right side of the magnificent cast iron fountain. This fountain, an exquisite addition not originally planned by Reginald Upcher in his design for the gardens, is truly a sight to behold. Its pedestal boasts intricate dolphin and cherub motifs riding tortoises while gracefully spouting water jets. The upper part of the fountain features a remarkable finial shaped like a globe topped by an otter clutching a fish in its mouth. This whimsical creature also incorporates water jets that add movement and life to this already mesmerizing centerpiece. Morrab House itself holds historical significance as it was acquired by Penzance Corporation in 1888 for the purpose of creating both a public park and library. The gardens were meticulously designed by Reginald Upcher and officially opened on September 27th, 1889. Preserved through time by an unknown photographer's lens, this extraordinary image captures the essence of Victorian elegance blended seamlessly with Edwardian charm within Cornwall's natural beauty.
