Polruan, Lanteglos by Fowey Cornwall. 1904
This view of Polruan was taken from the window of Fowey Hotel and shows the village on the hillside with the Fowey Estuary in the foreground. A small sailing boat is amongst the vessels on the river. The ruin of St Saviours church, which dates to the 8th century, can be seen on the hill above Polruan. Clearly visible is the blockhouse fortification, built in the 14th century, that guards the entrance to the River Fowey. The blockhouse is one of a pair, its partner being situated on the Fowey side of the river. A defensive chain was strung between the two blockhouses to prevent enemy ships entering the harbour, with the chain being lowered for friendly vessels. This was primarily used during the wars with the Dutch. Photographer: Herbert Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1904 showcases the picturesque village of Polruan, nestled on a hillside overlooking the enchanting Fowey Estuary in Cornwall. Taken from the window of the esteemed Fowey Hotel, this view captures the essence of a bygone era. In the foreground, amidst an array of vessels gracefully sailing along the river, a small sailing boat catches our attention. Its presence adds to the charm and tranquility that permeates this idyllic fishing village. Perched atop the hill above Polruan stands St Saviours church ruins, which date back to the 8th century. A testament to centuries gone by, these remnants offer a glimpse into Polruan's rich history and cultural heritage. Dominating this scene is an imposing blockhouse fortification built during the 14th century. Positioned strategically at the entrance to River Fowey, it served as one half of a defensive pair alongside its counterpart on Fowey's side. These formidable structures were connected by a chain that prevented enemy ships from entering while allowing friendly vessels through—a crucial defense measure employed during conflicts with Dutch forces. The photographer behind this remarkable image is Herbert Hughes—an artist who masterfully captured not only stunning landscapes but also historical landmarks like these fortifications and churches. This extraordinary print transports us back in time—immersing us in Cornish coastal beauty while offering glimpses into its fascinating past filled with fishing traditions and fortified defenses against foreign threats.
