EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the sleek and powerful Thames Barge Genesta in full race mode during the Medway Barge Race of 1937. The Genesta, one of the many impressive vessels in the fleet owned by private individuals, was not associated with the Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd during this time. The Thames Barge, a traditional British sailing vessel, was a common sight on the English waterways during the interwar period. Known for their distinctive flat-bottomed hulls, tall masts, and large cargo holds, these barges were once the workhorses of the Thames Estuary, transporting goods between the industrial heartlands of London and the Kentish coast. However, the Medway Barge Race was a time for these vessels to put aside their commercial duties and compete against each other in a thrilling display of seamanship and sailing prowess. The annual event attracted large crowds and was a much-anticipated spectacle for the local community. In this photograph, taken by Charles E Brown for the Royal Air Force Museum, the Genesta can be seen cutting through the water with ease, her sails billowing in the wind. The crew, dressed in their racing gear, are focused intently on the task at hand, their determination etched on their faces. The race is on, and the Genesta is in the lead. The Medway Barge Race and the Thames Barge are a testament to the rich maritime history of the Thames Estuary and the enduring spirit of competition and camaraderie that continues to this day. This photograph is not only a beautiful record of a bygone era but also a reminder of the enduring allure of the sea and the thrill of the race.
