Fishermen row a boat in the knee-deep Neijing River near the city of Honghu in central
Fishermen row a boat in the knee-deep Neijing River near the city of Honghu in central Chinas Hubei Province May 30, 2011. The river is normally many metres deep at this time of year, but local fishermen say its the lowest they have seen it in 70 years. Almost 35 million people across five provinces on the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze have been affected to different degrees by the drought, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs said last week. Farmers said they would need generous rainfall in coming weeks, or the first of their two annual rice crops could wither and die, and more of the thousands of fish and crab farms could lose all their stock. Millions of farmers in Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi and other provinces face similar threats of damaged or even lost rice crops. Picture taken May 30, 2011. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo, we witness a group of resilient fishermen rowing their boat through the knee-deep waters of the Neijing River near Honghu city in central China's Hubei Province. The scene is both serene and alarming as it reveals the devastating effects of an unprecedented drought that has plagued the region. Taken on May 30,2011, by David Gray for Reuters Images, this snapshot captures a river that should be several meters deep at this time of year reduced to mere ankle-depth. Local fishermen claim that it is the lowest they have ever seen in seven decades. However, these brave individuals continue to navigate its shallow currents with unwavering determination. The drought has not only impacted these fishermen but also nearly 35 million people across five provinces along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. As reported by the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs, communities are grappling with varying degrees of water scarcity and agricultural devastation. Farmers fear for their livelihoods as they desperately await generous rainfall in order to save their two annual rice crops from withering away. Additionally, thousands of fish and crab farms face potential losses if relief does not arrive soon. This poignant image serves as a stark reminder of our planet's vulnerability to climate change and its profound impact on local communities who rely on nature's resources for survival.
