Greenisland Viaducts, LMS poster, 1923-1947

Poster produced for London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to advertise the Greenisland Loop Line in Country Atrim, Northern Ireland. The Greenisland Loop Line, which opened in 1934, was constructed to eliminate the necessity of trains to and from Belfast and stations in the North running via Greenisland. The line was approximately 3 miles in length. The Main Line Viaduct was the largest reinforced concrete viaduct in the British Isles. Artwork by Norman Wilkinson, who studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. A famous marine painter, he designed posters for several railways and organised the Royal Academy series of posters for the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) in 1924

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage poster, created by renowned artist Norman Wilkinson, transports us back to the golden age of railway travel. The stunning artwork showcases the picturesque Greenisland Viaducts in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, a true marvel of engineering and beauty. Commissioned by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), this poster was designed to promote the newly constructed Greenisland Loop Line. Opening its tracks in 1934, this three-mile-long line revolutionized train journeys between Belfast and stations in the North by bypassing Greenisland. The Main Line Viaduct featured on this print proudly held the title of being the largest reinforced concrete viaduct in all of Britain. Wilkinson's artistic mastery shines through as he captures every detail of these magnificent viaducts against a backdrop of lush greenery and serene waters. His expertise as a marine painter is evident in his ability to convey both grandeur and tranquility simultaneously. This exquisite piece not only serves as an advertisement for LMS but also stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural brilliance that defined railway infrastructure during this era. Preserved within National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, it allows us to appreciate both Wilkinson's talent and the significance of railways in connecting communities across vast landscapes. As we gaze upon this timeless masterpiece, we are transported back to an era where rail travel was not just about reaching destinations but also about experiencing awe-inspiring sights along the way.
