EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling Southampton Central Station in 1936. The poster, produced by Southern Railway (SR), aims to promote this vital transportation hub as the ultimate destination for ships and trains from all corners of the country. The artwork, skillfully created by Patrick Cokayne Keely, showcases his talent not only in designing posters for SR but also for other prominent entities such as Great Western Railway (GWR), London Transport, and even governmental organizations like the British and Dutch governments. In this snapshot of history frozen in time, we can imagine the excitement that must have filled these platforms during the 1930s. Passengers eagerly awaited their departures or arrivals while surrounded by a flurry of activity. Trains chugged along with precision, ready to transport travelers to various factory sites nearby. Keely's artistic touch adds a sense of elegance and sophistication to this promotional piece. The graphic design elements are tastefully incorporated into the overall composition, capturing attention without overpowering its message. As we gaze at this remarkable railway poster from yesteryears preserved by NRM/Pictorial Collection at National Railway Museum, it serves as a reminder of how transportation has evolved over time while preserving memories of an era when train travel was at its peak.
