EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in tennis history. On the right, we see the triumphant winner, Steffi Graf, standing tall with her Wimbledon trophy. To her left stands Martina Navratilova, holding her runners-up plate with grace and sportsmanship. The image also features Alan Mills, the Wimbledon Referee, engaged in conversation with Graf. The date was July 2nd, 1988 when this iconic match took place at the prestigious grass court of South West London. It was a battle between two tennis legends - Graf and Navratilova. Despite an impressive comeback by Navratilova in the first set where she won six straight games after being down 5-3, it was ultimately Graf who emerged victorious. This victory marked a significant milestone for Steffi Graf as it became her first of seven Wimbledon singles title wins throughout her illustrious career. She went on to dominate the championships in subsequent years - 1989,1991,1992,1993,1995 and finally in 1996. The photograph itself is a testament to both players' skill and determination on that fateful day. It serves as a timeless reminder of their incredible athleticism and competitive spirit that captivated audiences around the world during one of tennis' most celebrated eras –the vibrant decade of the '80s.
