Hundreds of children packed the piazza for the switching on of the Christmas lights
Hundreds of children packed the piazza for the switching on of the Christmas lights. Miss Examiner, Madeline Garbutt, and television cartoon character Danger Mouse are pictured with some of the young audience before they performed the switch on ceremony. The massive turnout of youngsters suited perfectly the theme chosen by Huddersfield Retail Association for its festive celebrations - Its a Childrens Christmas. Mr Peter Marshall, chairman of the associations promotions committee, said there were 20, 000 bulbs - double the number last year - giving a festive glow to New Street, King Street, Market Place, the Piazza, Market Avenue and Market Walk. They cost £ 5, 500, paid for with donations from industry and commerce in Huddersfield, and funds raised by the Retail Association, which has also organised late-night shopping. 28th November 1986

EDITORS COMMENTS
Hundreds of children eagerly gathered in the piazza, their eyes sparkling with excitement, as they awaited the magical moment when the Christmas lights would illuminate the town. Amongst them stood Miss Examiner, Madeline Garbutt, and a special guest - none other than television cartoon character Danger Mouse himself. The young audience couldn't contain their delight as they posed for a photo with these beloved figures before they took center stage to perform the switch on ceremony. The overwhelming turnout of youngsters perfectly aligned with Huddersfield Retail Association's chosen theme for this year's festive celebrations - 'It's a Children's Christmas'. And what better way to capture their imagination than by doubling last year's number of bulbs? A staggering 20,000 bulbs adorned New Street, King Street, Market Place, the Piazza, Market Avenue and Market Walk – casting a warm and enchanting glow throughout the town. Thanks to generous donations from local industry and commerce in Huddersfield and funds raised by the Retail Association itself, these mesmerizing lights were made possible at a cost of £5,500. But it wasn't just about illuminating streets; late-night shopping events were also organized to enhance everyone's holiday experience. This snapshot taken on November 28th in 1986 not only captures an era filled with joyous festivities but also reminds us that sometimes it takes something as simple as twinkling lights to bring out our inner child during this magical season.
