Latest craze could be life-saver The latest international kids

Latest craze could be life-saver
The latest international kids craze could save lives. Kirklees road safety chiefs have specially imported hundreds of fluorescent animal reflectors as they launch their autumn " Be safe-be seen" campaign. The reflective cerise bear, green cat and yellow owl tags, each on a matching fluorescent springy cord, have become all the rage in Finland - a country used to dark nights. The craze has already swept across Scandinavia. Kirklees district road safety officer Mr Richard Houghton said there had been a dramatic improvement in road safety there since they were introduced. " A driver using dipped headlights cannot see a pedestrian until he or she is within 20 or 30 metres. But, if pedestrians use good prism reflectors, they can be spotted at 150 metres. We are concerned about the number of accidents in the Kirklees area and the council is trying to do something to improve the situation, " he said. And he said the latest trend was not confined to children - the over 60s were at risk on the roads as well. " We want walking sticks dressed up like Christmas trees so they can be seen, " he said. " And by wearing something bright, white or reflective, everybody can improve their safety." The fluorescent " pets" cost £ 1 and will be widely available in Kirklees schools and from the road safety office in Albion Street, Huddersfield, which also sell hats, scarves and other fluorescent gear. Children from Ravensthorpe Infants School were the first to receive the fluorescent tags when they were visited by Kirklees Deputy Mayor Clr Mervyn Drayton and deputy road safety chairman Clr Harold Copley.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see a group of children proudly displaying their latest fashion accessory - fluorescent animal reflectors. This international kids craze has taken the world by storm and is now being hailed as a potential life-saver. Kirklees road safety chiefs have imported hundreds of these reflective cerise bear, green cat, and yellow owl tags from Finland to launch their "Be safe-be seen" campaign. The popularity of these trendy accessories stems from their ability to significantly improve road safety, especially during dark nights. According to Kirklees district road safety officer Mr Richard Houghton, pedestrians wearing these prism reflectors can be spotted at an impressive distance of 150 meters compared to just 20 or 30 meters without them. This initiative aims to address the alarming number of accidents in the Kirklees area and extends its concern beyond children. The over-60s are also considered at risk on the roads, prompting suggestions for walking sticks dressed up like Christmas trees for better visibility. These fluorescent "pets" priced at £1 each, will be widely available in schools across Kirklees and can also be purchased from the road safety office in Albion Street, Huddersfield. In addition to these reflectors, hats, scarves, and other fluorescent gear are also sold there. In this heartwarming image captured by Memory Lane Prints staff on October 28th, 1991 (not affiliated with any company), we witness Carly Burt leading her friends Damian Smith, Damon Hanson, and Paula Hirst as they proudly showcase their new reflective gear. Let's hope that this latest craze continues to spread worldwide and contributes towards a safer future for all pedestrians.
