Making a splash... Nields Junior and Infant School opens its nature pond at assembly
Making a splash... Nields Junior and Infant School opens its nature pond at assembly. Mr Andrew Mansell (left), of Holmbridge, who built the pond at the Slaithwaite school, and Mr Bob McCartney, director general of the Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association, who sponsored it, fish for the newly introduced goldfish. The pond is part two of a scheme to build an extensive nature and wildlife area at the school. Children brought in snails, tadpoles and pond skater insects to start the pool off. Headmaster Harry Trumbell said all the 135 pupils would use the pond in their nature studies. The Rev Robin Townsend blessed the pond in assembly which was attended by the chairman of the school governors Mrs Christine Shepherd. 16th May 1990
