EDITORS COMMENTS
A swirl of kilts, a skirl of the bagpipes and its 'Geordie the brave. ' This print from 1986 takes us back to a momentous occasion when the South Shields Scottish Pipe Band showcased their exceptional talent at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. As one of 700 Scottish pipers gathered at Meadowbank Stadium, these young musicians left an indelible mark on this grand event. The band's remarkable skills were cultivated under the guidance of Dan McLean, an esteemed former pipe major from Oban who dedicated his knowledge to teaching them. Despite being 78 years old, Mr. McLean's passion for piping resonated with each member as they honed their craft. In this snapshot, we see Debbie White and her fellow bandmates proudly representing their community while being honored by the Scots themselves. The vibrant colors of their swirling kilts symbolize both tradition and unity as they stand united in musical harmony. This image captures not only a significant moment for these talented individuals but also serves as a testament to the power of music in bringing people together across cultures and borders. It is a reminder that through dedication and collaboration, even small communities can make a lasting impact on global stages.
