EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of the Battle of Ulundi, a pivotal moment in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. The scene is Sir Garnet Wolseley's camp, established following the British victory over the Zulu army at their ancestral capital. The defeat at Ulundi marked the end of the First Zulu War and the effective end of Zulu resistance against British encroachment into their territory. Sir Garnet Wolseley (1833-1913) assumed command of the British army from Lord Chelmsford after the latter was injured during the battle. Wolseley, a decorated military officer, had previously served in India and was known for his strategic brilliance. He led the British forces to a decisive victory at Ulundi, securing the British claim to Zululand. The photograph, taken in December 1879, shows the camp in a state of activity, with soldiers and camp followers milling about. In the background, Zulu prisoners can be seen, some in chains, others being led away. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the displacement of an entire people. The photograph is an important historical document, providing a glimpse into a pivotal moment in the Anglo-Zulu War and the broader history of colonialism in Africa. It is a testament to the complexities of war and its impact on the lives of those involved, both victors and vanquished."
