W Moult and J Fidler, workers at hatworks

Ernest Battersby took a number of photogrpahs of employees at the family hatworks in Stockport, and noted their names as well. It is not specified which man is which, but the census record show that both worked as Plankers, partof the felt production process. In 1911 Walter Moult was aged 40, married with three children in Charles Street, Stockport, and in the same year James Fidler was 38, married but boarding alone at Buckingham Street, Stockport. This makes the men about 33 and 35 years old and they illustrate the clothing typical of a factory worker at the time. Date: circa 1906

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Ernest Battersby around 1906, showcases two dedicated workers, Walter Moult and James Fidler, at the bustling Hatworks factory in Stockport, England. Though their specific roles within the millinery industry are not explicitly stated in the image, the census records of 1911 reveal that both men were employed as Plankers, an essential part of the felt production process. At around 33 and 35 years old, Walter Moult and James Fidler embody the typical attire of factory workers during this era. Walter, a married man with three children, is seen wearing a collared shirt, waistcoat, and trousers, while James, a married man boarding alone, dons a similar outfit, including a flat cap. Their clothing reflects the practicality and functionality required for long hours spent in the factory environment. The Hatworks, a family-owned business, was a significant contributor to the thriving millinery industry in Stockport. Ernest Battersby, a skilled photographer, captured these moments in time, leaving us a valuable record of the daily lives and work of the dedicated individuals who played a crucial role in the production of headwear during the early 20th century.
