EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," Vol.1, Plate 16, dates back to 1888. The illustration showcases three beautiful and distinct species of Cyanoramphus parakeets, native to New Zealand. At the center, the Yellow-crowned Parakeet or Kakariki (Cyanoramphus auriceps) is easily identified by its vibrant yellow feathers on the crown and nape. The Red-crowned Parakeet or Kakariki (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae), on the left, displays a bold red crown and nape, with green feathers covering the rest of its body. The Orange-fronted Parakeet or Kakariki (Cyanoramphus malherbi), on the right, is characterized by its bright orange feathers on the forehead and cheeks, with the rest of its body adorned in green plumage. These parakeets are part of the Psittaciformes order, which includes parrots and parakeets. They belong to the Sauropsida class, a group of reptile-like vertebrates, and are an essential part of New Zealand's unique and diverse avian fauna. The intricate details and lifelike quality of Keulemans' painting provide a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating birds and serve as a testament to his exceptional artistic skills.
