The asylum, which was erected between 1899 and 1903 by the Metropolitan Asylums Board, was designed to provide exceptional care for a unique group of patients. These included senile individuals and those with infirm epilepsy, who required individual attention that went beyond the capabilities of other mental health institutions at the time. The imposing entrance to Tooting Bec Asylum is marked by a large board bearing the name of the institution. The board's ornate design and the grandeur of the entrance gateway speak to the importance placed on the care and wellbeing of the patients who would reside within. The Metropolitan Asylums Board was a London-based organization responsible for the construction and management of mental health institutions across the city. Tooting Bec Asylum was one of many such institutions they established to address the growing need for specialized care for those with mental health conditions.
