EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the moment of courage and defiance embodied by Emily Wilding Davison during the Epsom Derby on June 4, 1913. Emily Davison, a prominent British suffragette, is seen in this photograph immediately after she ran onto the racecourse, disrupting the Derby to bring attention to the cause of women's suffrage. Dressed in a white blouse and a purple and green sash, the colors of the Women's Social and Political Union, Davison is shown being helped up by jockey Herbert Jones, who had ridden King's horse Anmer. The horse, startled by the sudden intrusion, reared up, adding to the chaos of the scene. The suffragette movement, which advocated for women's right to vote, had been gaining momentum in the early 20th century. Davison's daring act of protest, which resulted in her death just days later from her injuries, became a symbol of the movement's determination and sacrifice. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by suffragettes in their fight for women's suffrage, a cause that was finally achieved in 1928 with the passage of the Representation of the People Act. The historical significance of this image is undeniable, and it continues to be a powerful reminder of the courage and determination of the suffragette movement. The photograph captures a pivotal moment in history, one that helped to bring about a fundamental change in the political landscape of the United Kingdom.
