This 19th century colored engraving portrays a pivotal moment in Spanish history during the Revolt of the Comuneros (1520-1521). The image focuses on Maria Pacheco, a noblewoman of the House of Mendoza, who played a remarkable role in the uprising against the rule of Charles V. Maria Pacheco, born in 1496, was the wife of Juan Lopez de Padilla, the chief commoner who led the rebellion.
