This evocative print captures the stern yet thoughtful visage of Solomon Glass (1593-1656), a prominent German Protestant churchman and theologian of the 17th century. Born in the small town of Wittgenstein in Westphalia, Glass rose to prominence during a time of great religious and political turmoil in Europe. As a young man, Glass studied theology at the University of Marburg under the renowned theologian and philosopher, Johann Heinrich Alsted. It was during this time that he became deeply influenced by the teachings of Calvinism and the Reformed faith. Glass went on to hold various pastoral and academic positions throughout Germany, including the prestigious role of professor of theology at the University of Helmstedt. Despite his academic achievements, Glass was a man of deep spiritual convictions and a strong commitment to social justice. He was a vocal advocate for the rights of the poor and the marginalized, and spoke out against the excesses of the nobility and the wealthy. Glass was also a prolific writer, penning numerous theological treatises and commentaries on the Bible. This print, created in the mid-17th century, captures Glass in the prime of his life and career.
