EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of adventure and exploration during a safari led by A Company, 4th Battalion of the Kings African Rifles, in 1956. The image shows the rugged terrain of Northern Karamoja, located near the Sudan border, as the soldiers and their guides make their way towards Morote, some 210 days away. Lt. Roger Perkins, a member of the Ugandan battalion, documented the journey with a total of 41 photographs, including this one. The soldiers are seen here marching through the savannah, their uniforms and equipment contrasting against the golden grasses and blue sky. Their determination and focus are evident, as they navigate the challenging terrain and prepare for the long journey ahead. The Kings African Rifles, also known as the KAR, was a multi-national army formed in 1893 to serve in British East Africa. The battalion in this photograph was made up of soldiers from various ethnic groups in Uganda, reflecting the diverse makeup of the force. The safari was likely a training exercise, designed to test the soldiers' endurance and survival skills in the harsh African wilderness. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was still largely unexplored and the spirit of adventure was a driving force in human exploration. It is a reminder of the bravery and resilience of the soldiers who served in the Kings African Rifles, and the important role they played in shaping the history of Africa.
