EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image, a Red-cheeked Souslik (Citellius major), an adult rodent species also known as a steppe ground squirrel or suslik, is seen observing its surroundings with great alertness while feeding on spilled corn kernels along the side of a country road in the Orenburg region of South Russia. The Red-cheeked Souslik is a medium-sized mammal with distinctive red patches on its cheeks, making it an easily recognizable member of the squirrel family. The Red-cheeked Souslik is native to the grasslands and steppes of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. These agile creatures are excellent burrowers and are often found in colonies, living in complex underground systems that can extend up to 1.5 meters in length. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on a variety of vegetation, including grasses, fruits, and nuts. This particular Red-cheeked Souslik appears to be in a state of heightened awareness, its hind legs slightly parted, and its ears perked up, as it keeps a watchful eye on its surroundings. It is likely that this individual was separated from its colony during transportation, as evidenced by its presence near a roadway. The Red-cheeked Souslik holds historical significance as well. This species was first described by the renowned German naturalist, Peter Simon Pallas, in 1773. Today, the Red-cheeked Souslik remains an essential component of the grassland ecosystem, playing a crucial role in seed dispersal and contributing to the overall health and productivity of the steppe habitat. This evocative photograph offers a glimpse into the life of this fascinating mammal, highlighting its adaptability and resilience in the face of human activity. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting the habitats of wildlife species, ensuring their continued survival and the richness of our natural world.
