EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grim reality of life in the Mokattam district of Cairo, Egypt during the 1990s. The filthy street is surrounded by towering heaps of trash and waste, with plastic bags and other discarded items scattered haphazardly about. The air is thick with smoke and the stench of burning and rotting refuse fills the nostrils. The zaballeen, or garbage collectors, can be seen sifting through the debris in search of valuable materials to recycle or sell. Poverty is evident in every corner of the frame, with worn-down buildings and dilapidated structures serving as a backdrop to the scene. The filth and dirt that cover the ground and the walls are a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the community in managing their waste and living in such harsh conditions. Despite the difficult circumstances, the resilient spirit of the people shines through, as they continue to make the best of their situation and eke out a living in the midst of the chaos. This image offers a poignant glimpse into the daily struggles of life in one of Cairo's poorest neighborhoods during a time of great transformation and urban growth.
