de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk G-AOSU (msn 0217 - ex RAF WB722) at Newcastle Airport. In 1977, this aircraft was in the process of conversion to the Supermunk prototype, powered by a 180hp Lycoming engine, at Staverton when work was stopped. Bought by the Royal Air Force Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA), along with jigs, tooling, paperwork and rights to the conversion. OSU was completed and a series of further conversions were carried out by the RAFGSA, for use as glider tugs at RAFGSA clubs. Date: 1960s

In this photograph, we find the de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk aircraft with the registration number G-AOSU (msn 0217, ex-RAF WB722) at Newcastle Airport. This image transports us back to 1977, a pivotal year in the history of this iconic aircraft. At the time, G-AOSU was undergoing conversion to the Supermunk prototype at Staverton, with a powerful 180hp Lycoming engine installed. However, the conversion work was abruptly halted.
