EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina, registration number N610FF, also known as Canadian Vickers PBV-1A Canso, at London Heathrow Airport during the 60 Years of Heathrow celebration in 1965. The PBY-5A, manufactured by Canadian Vickers and bearing the factory serial number CV-399, is based in Toronto, Canada, with Barringer Research Limited. At the time, this aircraft was extensively used for low-level geophysical surveys. The PBY-5A, a versatile amphibian aircraft, was a significant contributor to maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, and search and rescue operations during World War II. Post-war, it found new life in various roles, including scientific research. Unfortunately, the history of N610FF took a tragic turn on October 15, 1970. While operating at Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport in Wisconsin, the aircraft took off with severe airframe icing, leading to a crash shortly after takeoff. Despite its unfortunate end, this iconic aeroplane's legacy continues to be celebrated in aviation history. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of aviation and the remarkable aircraft that have graced the skies. The PBY-5A, with its distinctive flying boat configuration and impressive capabilities, remains a symbol of innovation and exploration in the realm of aeronautical transportation.
