EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the Battle of Cape Ecnomus, a pivotal naval engagement of the First Punic War, fought off the southern coast of Sicily in 256 BCE. The Carthaginian fleet, commanded by Hannibal Gisco, is shown on the left side of the image, while the Roman Republic's fleet, led by Marcus Atilius Regulus, is on the right. The Carthaginian fleet is organized into four squadrons: the first, second, and third squadrons are visible in the foreground, while the fourth squadron is hidden behind the third. The first and second squadrons are arranged in a line ahead formation, with the third squadron towing cargo vessels for resupply. The Roman fleet, meanwhile, is also organized into four squadrons, with the first and second squadrons forming a similar line ahead formation. The third and fourth squadrons are not visible in this image. The Battle of Cape Ecnomus is significant for its innovative naval tactics. The Carthaginians, known for their superior naval technology, employed a new tactic of towing cargo vessels to extend the range of their ships and prolong the battle. The Romans, however, successfully outmaneuvered the Carthaginian fleet and inflicted heavy damage, leading to a Carthaginian retreat. This print, created by Terry Parker, offers a fascinating glimpse into the naval warfare of ancient times and the strategic planning that went into these epic battles. The intricate details of the ships and their formations transport us back to the Mediterranean Sea over 2,000 years ago.
