EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored botanical engraving, titled "Common Wall-Bugloss and Houndstongue," is an exquisite example of the intricate detail and artistry found in Joshua Hamilton's "Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, Enlarged." Published in London in 1792 by W. Locke, this work was an expansion of the original "Culpeper's Herbal," which was first published in 1653. The engraving showcases two distinct plants: the Common Wall-Bugloss (Lysimachia nummularia) and the Houndstongue (Cynoglossum officinale). The Common Wall-Bugloss, depicted on the left, is a low-growing perennial plant with round, nummular (round and flat) leaves, and small, yellow or white flowers that bloom in clusters. The plant's name derives from its preference for growing on walls and its nummular leaves. The engraving illustrates the plant in its entirety, from its root system to its flowering tops, with remarkable accuracy. On the right, the Houndstongue plant is illustrated. This biennial or perennial herb is characterized by its distinctive, lobed leaves and spikes of pink, purple, or blue flowers. The plant's common name derives from its sticky, hound-like roots, which were believed to resemble the tongues of hounds. The intricate details of the Houndstongue's leaves, flowers, and seeds are beautifully rendered in this engraving. The botanical illustrations in "Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, Enlarged" were produced using the copperplate engraving technique, which involved creating a design on a copper plate, etching the design, and then inking and printing the image onto paper. The handcoloring added an additional layer of artistry and detail to the already intricate engravings. This beautiful print is a testament to the skill and dedication of the engravers, colorists, and publishers of the time, and remains a valuable resource for botanical research and appreciation today.
