EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning Mayan monolith, known as Zoomorph P or colloquially as "The Great Turtle," is a remarkable artifact from the ancient Maya civilization, discovered at the archaeological site of Quirigua in Guatemala. Dated back to the 8th century AD, this monumental piece is located in the department of Izabal in south-eastern Guatemala and weighs around 20 tons. Quirigua is an essential archaeological site, showcasing the unique artistic and architectural achievements of the Maya civilization. This particular carving is a testament to the intricate and symbolic nature of their beliefs. The monolith depicts a larger-than-life portrait of the deity "Sky Xul," who is seated cross-legged in the open jaws of an enormous crocodile-mountain hybrid monster. The monster represents the Earth Monster, a common motif in Mesoamerican mythology. The intricate carving on the monolith showcases Sky Xul's regal features, with a headdress adorned with feathers and a serene expression. The juxtaposition of the human figure and the monstrous creature highlights the power and dominance of the deity. This masterpiece of Mesoamerican art is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and the deep-rooted beliefs of the ancient Maya civilization. The 20s and 1920s may have passed, but the allure and significance of this monolith remain unchanged. It continues to captivate and inspire scholars, artists, and visitors alike, offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of the ancient Maya civilization.
