EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Scholars of the Library of Grand Vizier Koca Mehmet Ragib Pasha, an esteemed Ottoman statesman during the reign of Sultan Mustafa III (1757-1774). The image, created by Verico after Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1842, offers a glimpse into the tranquil and scholarly atmosphere of the Ottoman Empire. The scene unfolds in the Biblioteca del Gran Visir Raghib Pascha, or the Library of the Grand Vizier Raghib Pasha, located in Istanbul. Scholars, dressed in turbans and seated on low tables covered with carpets, are engrossed in their studies. The serene and sepulchral ambiance is further emphasized by the presence of a shrine or tomb (turbe) in the background. The Library of Grand Vizier Koca Mehmet Ragib Pasha was an essential institution for the Ottoman Empire, housing an extensive collection of manuscripts, books, and other valuable resources. The Grand Vizier himself was a renowned patron of learning and culture, making the library a hub for scholars and intellectuals. This illustration, taken from Ignace Mouradgea d'Ohsson's "Tableau General de L'Empire Othoman," published in Paris in 1790, offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical fashion, history, and Islamic culture of the Ottoman Empire. The intricate details of the scholars' clothing, the ornate design of the library, and the solemnity of the scholars at work all contribute to the richness and depth of this image.
