EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the intricate details of Conophytum minutum, also known as the Tiny Fig-Marigold or Mesembryanthemum minutum. The engraving, created by F. Sansom based on an original illustration by Sydenham Edwards, was first published in William Curtis' esteemed The Botanical Magazine in London in 1811. Conophytum minutum is a diminutive succulent plant native to South Africa. Its small, rounded leaves are covered in a fine, white powder, which helps to reflect sunlight and conserve water in its arid habitat. The plant produces tiny, star-shaped, yellow flowers that bloom in late winter or early spring. The meticulous attention to detail in this engraving highlights the unique features of the Tiny Fig-Marigold, from the delicate veining on its leaves to the intricate patterns on its stems. The hand-coloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image, making it a stunning addition to any botanical collection. Sydenham Edwards (1769-1815) was a renowned botanical artist and illustrator, known for his precise and detailed drawings of plants. He collaborated with several prominent botanists and horticulturists of the time, including William Curtis, to produce accurate and beautiful illustrations for various botanical publications. William Curtis (1746-1799) was a British botanist, horticulturist, and publisher. He is best known for his seminal work, The Botanical Magazine, which was the first journal devoted exclusively to the publication of colored plates of new and exotic plants. The journal was instrumental in advancing botanical knowledge and promoting the cultivation of exotic plants in Europe. This engraving is a testament to the beauty and intrigue of the natural world and the skill of the artists and craftsmen who captured it on paper.
