EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from John Mason Good's Pantologia, A New Encyclopedia published in London in 1813, showcases a fascinating assemblage of insects: an American cockroach (Blatta americana), a common black cockroach (Blatta orientalis), a bumble bee (Bombylius major and Bombylius medius), and a leathery cerambyx beetle (Cerambyx coriarius). The American cockroach, the largest of the common household pests, is depicted here with its characteristic long antennae and broad, oval body. The common black cockroach, also known as the oriental cockroach, is shown in a similar pose. In contrast to the creepy crawlies, the bumble bees, represented by both the early humble bee (Bombylius major) and the early humble bumble bee (Bombylius medius), are depicted in a more endearing light. Their plump bodies and distinctive yellow and black stripes are a familiar sight in many gardens. The leathery cerambyx beetle, with its impressive size and intricate patterns, is a sight to behold. The beetle is shown here with its eggs, adding an element of life cycle to the image. This engraving not only showcases the natural history of these insects but also highlights their unique beauty and intricacy. The meticulous handcolouring adds depth and dimension to the engraving, making it a stunning piece of art as well as a scientific record.
