EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the jubilant spirit of the American colonists as they celebrate the repeal of the Stamp Act on May 16, 1766. The Stamp Act, passed on March 22, 1765, imposed a new tax on all colonists requiring them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. This included shipping papers, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, and even playing cards. The tax was highly unpopular, sparking widespread protests and acts of rebellion against British rule. The Liberty-Pole Festival depicted in this print celebrates the repeal of the Stamp Act, with colonists gathering around the symbolic Liberty Pole, a potent symbol of dissent against British rule. The Liberty Pole had become a rallying point for the colonists, with crowds gathering around it to express their grievances and demonstrate their resistance to British taxation. The print shows a lively scene of colonists, many of them bearing stamps in their hands, gathered around the Liberty Pole, which is adorned with the British flag and the American flag. The masses of people in the crowd, dressed in the fashion of the 1760s, reflect the widespread support for the cause of repeal. The festive atmosphere is further emphasized by the banners and streamers hanging from the Liberty Pole and the celebratory mood of the crowd. This print is a testament to the power of collective action and the determination of the American colonists to assert their rights against British rule. It is a significant document of the 18th century, providing valuable insights into the political climate of the time and the spirit of rebellion that would ultimately lead to the American Revolution.
