EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed handcolored steel engraving showcases the stunning beauty of the adult male Amazilia hummingbird (Dumerilii), also known as the Blue-throated Hummingbird or Ornismya dumerilii. The illustration was created by Jean-Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Coutant for Rene Primevere's "Lessons Natural History of the Colibri Genus of Hummingbirds," published in Paris by Arthus Bertrand in 1830. The Amazilia hummingbird is a small, iridescent bird native to Central America and northern South America. The male is easily identified by its vibrant, electric-blue throat, which contrasts sharply with its green back and wings. The female, on the other hand, has a duller, greenish-gray throat and a more subdued coloration overall. Hummingbirds are renowned for their unique abilities, including the capacity to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings up to 80 times per second. They are also the only group of birds that are able to fly in all directions, including backward. The Amazilia hummingbird is an important pollinator in its native habitats, feeding on nectar from a variety of flowers. It is also known to consume small insects for protein. This beautiful engraving not only captures the physical attributes of the Amazilia hummingbird but also serves as a testament to the skill and artistry of the natural history illustrators and engravers of the 19th century. It is a valuable addition to any collection of natural history prints or ornithology studies.
