EDITORS COMMENTS
This ink and watercolor cartoon, titled "No.2," is an original work by the renowned British artist Thomas Rowlandson, created circa 1815. The whimsical image depicts a woman in a bonnet, determinedly walking at a brisk pace on a hot summer day. With a look of concentration on her face, she seems to have made up her mind to overtake the woman in front of her. As she eagerly turns to pass, however, the woman is taken aback by an unexpected sight. The woman in front, previously appearing angelic in the scorching heat, has transformed into a Gorgon, a mythical creature known for its petrifying gaze. The sudden revelation leaves the woman frozen in fear, her progress brought to an abrupt halt. This intriguing scene is one of ten original ink and watercolor drawings by Thomas Rowlandson, all signed by the artist and undated. The delicate interplay of ink and watercolor, as well as Rowlandson's keen sense of humor and storytelling ability, make this a truly captivating work of art. The image invites the viewer to ponder the unexpected twists and turns of life, and the importance of appearances. Thomas Rowlandson was a prolific artist, known for his satirical and humorous works. His ability to capture the human condition in all its complexity and absurdity is evident in this charming and intriguing cartoon. This image, with its rich history and timeless themes, is a must-have for any serious art collector or enthusiast.
