EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic moment captured in 1964, eighteen-year-old Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark exchanges vows with twenty-four-year-old King Constantine of Greece at the Athens Metropolitan Basilica of the Annunciation. The royal wedding, presided over by Archbishop Chryssostomos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church, marked the union of the young couple in the heart of ancient Greece. The ceremony was an elegant and grand affair, attended by dignitaries and royalty from around the world. Notable among the guests was Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, representing Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Anne herself, who served as her sister's bridesmaid. King Constantine, the eldest son of King Paul I and Queen Frederica, had ascended to the throne just two years prior to his marriage to Princess Anne-Marie. The Danish princess, the eldest daughter of King Frederick IX and Queen Ingrid, was a popular figure in Greece, having spent much of her childhood there. The Athens Metropolitan Basilica of the Annunciation, a stunning example of Byzantine architecture, provided a fitting backdrop for the royal nuptials. The ancient city of Athens, steeped in history and culture, added an air of grandeur and tradition to the occasion. This photograph, taken in 1964, captures the essence of a royal wedding, filled with tradition, history, and the promise of a bright future for the newlywed couple. The union of Princess Anne-Marie and King Constantine would go on to produce three children and strengthen the bonds between Denmark and Greece for generations to come.
