EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing 18th century trade card depicts a scene of nocturnal activity in the heart of London. The image, titled "William Woodward, Nightman, Carman and Chimney Sweeper," showcases the essential services provided by three tradesmen during the hours of darkness. At the center, William Woodward, the nightman, is shown emptying a large rubbish cart onto a pile of debris. The nightman was responsible for collecting and disposing of the city's nightly waste, including human waste, which was often collected from privies and chamber pots. His essential role in maintaining public health and hygiene was a vital part of London's urban infrastructure. To the left, a chimney sweep, likely employed by Woodward, is seen cleaning soot from the chimney of a house. The sweeper's presence underscores the close connection between the nightman and the chimney sweep, as both professions relied on each other to keep London's homes clean and functional. A carman, or carrier, is shown to the right, leading a team of horses and carts. The carman transported goods and merchandise throughout the city, making deliveries and collections during the night when businesses were closed. His role was crucial in ensuring that London's commercial activities continued uninterrupted. This trade card, produced by William Woodward, highlights the diverse and interconnected trades that kept London functioning around the clock. The image provides a fascinating glimpse into the city's nighttime economy and the essential services provided by its tradesmen.
