This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two majestic birds of prey native to the Americas: the Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) and the Crested Eagle (Morphnus guianensis). The illustration, part of Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, was produced in Paris, France. Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, created the original artwork for this engraving. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, Pretre captured the intricacies of these birds' plumage and anatomy with remarkable accuracy. The engraving was then expertly executed by Coutant, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Harpy Eagle, the largest and most powerful eagle in the Americas, is depicted with its broad wings spread, showcasing its impressive size and regal presence.
