EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, an adult European Bison, also known as a Wisent or European Wisent, stands proudly in a birch forest. The image was captured in the Okskii Wildlife Reserve, located near Ryazan in central Russia, during the autumn season in September. The European Bison is the largest surviving European terrestrial mammal and is a true symbol of the Old World's wilderness. The majestic bison, with its massive body and powerful build, exudes strength and masculinity. Its thick, shaggy coat, which turns darker in color during the autumn months, provides insulation against the cold Russian winters. The bison's distinctive curved horns, which can grow up to 1.5 meters in length, are not only a defining feature of this magnificent creature but also serve as essential tools for defense against predators and rivals. The European Bison once roamed the vast woodlands of Europe, but due to habitat loss and hunting, their numbers dwindled to just a few hundred by the late 19th century. Today, thanks to conservation efforts, their population has grown to over 6,000 individuals, with the majority living in protected areas like the Okskii Wildlife Reserve. This photograph not only showcases the beauty and power of the European Bison but also highlights the importance of preserving the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it. The bison's peaceful presence among the birch trees is a reminder of the rich history and diversity of European wildlife.
