EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful and evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of Ethiopia and Somalia, as Ethiopian refugees are stopped at the border in 1935. The Italians, who had invaded Ethiopia earlier that year, are seen here preventing the Ethiopians from crossing into Somalia. The image is a poignant reminder of the human cost of the Italian conquest of Ethiopia, which marked the end of the country's independence and the beginning of a 50-year Italian occupation. The photograph was taken during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, also known as the Abyssinian War, which began on October 3, 1935, when Italian forces invaded Ethiopia from Eritrea and Italian Somaliland. The war was a significant event in African history, as Ethiopia was the last independent African state to be colonized by European powers. The Ethiopian people, who had a long and proud history of independence, were caught off guard by the Italian invasion, which was launched under the pretext of protecting Italian interests in the region. The Italians used modern weapons and tactics, including poison gas, to overwhelm the Ethiopian army, which was largely made up of poorly armed and trained soldiers. The photograph shows the determination and resilience of the Ethiopian people, who are seen here trying to cross the border into Somalia in search of safety and refuge. The Italians, who are seen in the background, are depicted as the oppressive force that is preventing them from doing so. The image is a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of preserving the sovereignty and independence of nations.
