Don Juan de Borbón (1913-1993) was the eldest son of Alfonso, Count of Barcelona, and his wife Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. He was a grandnephew of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and a cousin of the exiled monarch, who had been deposed in 1931. Don Juan's marriage to Infanta Maria de las Mercedes, the youngest sister of the future King Juan Carlos I, was arranged to strengthen the claims of the Borbón dynasty to the Spanish throne. The couple's eldest son, Alfonso (b. 1937), would later become the Duke of Calabria and the head of the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. Juan Carlos (b. 1938), the second eldest, would eventually ascend to the Spanish throne in 1975, following the death of Francisco Franco. Pilar (b. 1936) and Margarita (b. 1939) are the younger sisters in the photograph.
