This evocative print depicts the renowned Scottish artist David Roberts (1796-1864), a pivotal figure in the history of British art. Roberts is best known for his detailed and romanticized depictions of the Middle East, which he visited during a grand tour in the 1830s. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Roberts showed an early aptitude for art and was apprenticed to a local engraver at the age of 14. He later studied at the Royal Academy in London, where he honed his skills in painting and drawing. In the late 1820s, Roberts embarked on a journey to the Middle East, accompanied by the American artist Charles Robert Leslie. His experiences during this trip would prove to be a turning point in his career.
