EDITORS COMMENTS
of the Loten Collection, a stunning 18th-century artwork by Pieter Cornelius de Bevere, showcases an intriguing assemblage of dead birds, showcasing their diverse anatomies and intricate details. De Bevere, a Flemish painter born in 1710 and active until 1789, meticulously captured the essence of each avian subject, from their distinctive crests and curved beaks to the intricacies of their feathers and anatomy. The array of birds in this painting spans various orders, including the Coraciiformes, represented by the bee-eater, and the Passeriformes, with the brown bird identified as a Dicaeum species and the small bird as an Aegithina. The presence of a bee and an angiosperm flower in the scene adds an interesting ecological context to the artwork. Among the avian subjects, we find the crested Dicaeid, a common family of small, colorful birds native to Asia. The Dicaeum species, with its distinctive bill, is depicted in this plate. Another bird, identified as an Aegithina, is a member of the Aegithinidae family, known for their small size and distinctive bill shape. The inclusion of arthropods, such as the bee, adds an additional layer of complexity to the artwork. The interconnectedness of various species, including birds, arthropods, and angiosperms, highlights the intricacies of the natural world during the 18th century. This artwork serves as a testament to de Bevere's skill and the beauty of the natural world, offering a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the past.
